We are all working harder and longer, so it's more important than ever that our down time is spent relaxing and kicking back as much as possible.
Your bedroom is the best place to start to create a relaxing environment at home.
The average person getting 8 hours sleep per night - ( who get's that? )
and you live, say, 75 years, that's 25 years asleep, or 9,125 days .
By considering these nine essential elements, you can turn your sleep space into an indulgent, cosy and serene sanctuary.
Your Bed and Bedding
The most important element in any bedroom, but many of us have an uncomfortable bed so invest in a good quality base and mattress and replace it after 5 years.
The same goes for bedding , buy the best quality you can , and made with natural fibres such as cotton or linen - especially in this weather to allow you to stay cool . There's nothing worse than not being able to sleep as it's too hot ! If you do go for cotton, go for a minimum of 400 thread count.
Thread count refers to the number of horizontal and vertical threads per square inch. Generally, the higher the thread count, the softer the sheet, and the more likely it will wear well-or even soften-over time. Good sheets range anywhere from 200 to 800, although you'll occasionally see numbers over 1,000.
Lighting & Air Quality In most bedrooms, space is at a premium and you don’t necessarily have room for large lamps, books, flowers and other bits and pieces. Go for wall or pendant lights next to your bed. With more space on your bedside surface, you might have room for a few indulgent bits and pieces, such as fresh flowers or plants to help . Houseplants help to remove carbon dioxide, can provide scents that aid relaxation, and will bring a natural mood-boosting element into the space.
For plants that continue to produce oxygen throughout the night, you could choose aloe vera and mother-in-law’s tongue. For easier breathing, go for peace lilies and areca palms.
Use paint colour to set the mood
Keep your space serene with neutral colour palettes.
Pale to mid greys work well in the bedroom, as they help calm the mind and set you up for a perfect night’s sleep.
Control the natural light When it comes to dressing your windows, the bedroom is one of the most important rooms to get right. Not only should the window treatment look beautiful and complement your scheme, it must also work effectively to keep out light.
Whether you opt for shutters, blinds or curtains (or a combination) make sure the lining is thick enough to block any street light or early morning sun.
Needs to be tactile and soft underfoot for a luxury feel, but still practical. For many of us, bedrooms are all about comfort and indulgence, so you might want to choose a luxurious, soft carpet for the flooring. We’re often bare-footed in the bedroom, so it’s nice to have something soft and warm to stand on when you get out of bed on a cold winter morning.
If you love the look of bare floorboards, choose a soft rug and place it where you’re most likely to stand.
